Not far from St. Mark’s Square in the oldest area of Venice, is Palazzetto Balbi, an imposing building with clear seventeenth-century characteristics. The building consists of a double noble floor overlooking Rio di San Zulian and also the now-buried canal known as “Piscina San Samuele” from which the main facade can be admired. Over the centuries it has been the prestigious patrician home of the Balbi family, whose memory it still retains in addition to its name, thanks to some frescoed ceilings. Despite some heavy interior changes, the traditional layout can still be found, especially on the exterior elevations which have remained almost unchanged. A chronic lack of maintenance has caused the deterioration of the exterior, with the complete detachment of plaster and the formation of black crusts on the stone parts. Waiting for a more general redevelopment and enhancement of the entire building, the decision was made in close cooperation with the Superintendency of Monuments to address the stone elements on the roof with a thorough restoration and cleaning as well as the plaster on the three sides of the building. The new plaster was evaluated by analyzing some very small ancient fragments found after the scaffolding was erected. Pressed and smoothed in a light color, but not completely white, it resembles the finish of the original marmorino. Plaster was done on the two “main” sides of the building, on Piscina San Zulian and on the Rio, while on the Calle Balbi side (southeast side) a sagramatura was made, using a similar material and color to the other sides, but not pressed and smoothed. The new dormer window on the roof with the panoramic roof-terrace facing St. Mark’s Square fits in as a novel element that, thanks to the building’s considerable height, gives a priceless view of the city and its lagoon.
