The social housing project is part of the broader European Horizon 2020 programme, which embraces the principles of innovation and economic and environmental sustainability, and promotes initiatives that have positive social spin-offs and construct possible new markets. The project is intended to bring a stable residential service to elderly people in the Padua community, combining it with new ‘smart’ technology. The buildings have been designed with construction technologies aimed at ensuring the control of energy, following the principles of the LEED protocol, and accessibility for those with reduced mobility to all rooms in the complex. Each residence is fitted with domotic systems for heating and cooling, and constant health monitoring is available to guests needing particular medical care. The user interface design of the terminals will be especially studied according to the ‘design for all’ principle, so as to facilitate the use of digital tools by the elderly guests and involve them in the use of new technology, promoting the digital inclusion of the weakest social stratum. The web based applications in the complex will subsequently be able to interface with the possible municipal services, from the public transport network to home deliveries, with the aim of contributing to the construction of an urban smart network. The external spaces provide for phyto-purification and rainwater collection systems, and mobility rehabilitation pathways, with areas dedicated to horticulture.
