The building located in Campo San Pietro di Castello, Venice, shows the typical historic and architectural tradition of nineteenth-century Venetian residential blocks, with the facades open on four sides only on the second floor. Depicted in numerous historic views, including paintings by Canaletto and engravings by G.B Brustolon and M.S. Gianpiccoli, the facades have an ordered composition with windows and entrance doors aligned. Access is from the north side facing Campo San Pietro and from the water door on the canal to the west. The restoration project conformed to the client’s wish to create a holiday home, conserving the characteristics of the typical Venetian residence. A communal stairway and lift give access to all the rooms, but at the same time the internal layout offers an alternative for personal privacy, so some rooms can be used privately if required. The restoration respects the Venetian construction tradition, retaining the terrazzo or pastellone floors inside and leaving the wooden roof beams visible, which go well with the choice of quality finishes, such as the white and Istrian stone of the bathrooms. On the ground floor the big cavana, a typical boatshed created in the body of Venetian buildings on the side facing the canal, has been made practicable by installing tanking against high tides. The ground floor rooms give access to the garden, restored on the inner side. The external plasters remade in beaten earthenware and the door and window frames with wooden shutters complete the renewal of the facades. Finally, recovery of the attic allows its use and gives access to the roof terrace with its panoramic view over the Castello district and the buildings of the Arsenale.
