Giudecca, the largest of the Venetian islands and the closest to the old city centre, is distinguished by minor housing consisting of blocks of two or three floors surrounded by private courtyards or campielli and a dense fabric of calli and internal canals. This is the context of the apartment restored by the studio, reworking its interior spaces. Situated on the second floor of a typical pre-nineteenth-century building, the main facade looks onto the Rio del Ponte Longo, between the Redentore and Palanca, while the opposite side faces the calle that crosses the island laterally to the view over the south lagoon. A holiday home for short stays or to host exclusive clientele was created at the client’s request. The restoration project upgraded the communal areas, stairwell and service rooms on the ground floor, and the entire residential unit. The study of the internal layout favours the living area, located on the more well lit side with a view towards the canal. The service rooms, located in the central part of the apartment, act as a filter to the sleeping area on the inner, more private side towards the calle. The entrance, entirely lined with wall mirrors and fitted with sliding doors in an attempt to expand perception of the space, provides access to the sleeping area and the living area, consisting of a corner kitchen-dining room communicating with the living room by means of a large opening. Special attention was focused on the choice of finishes, the hand basins and shower trays in yellow Vicenza stone, like the other wall claddings, Venetian terrazzo floors and the choice of fitted furnishings for each room.
